In the paper below, licensed falconer Megan Martin discusses how trained falcons or hawks are used to manage unwanted “pest” birds.
This technique, called “raptor abatement” or “falconry abatement” can be used in any situation where a pest prey bird (e.g. European starling, pigeon, house sparrow, American crow, Canada goose, or gull) is overpopulated or creating an environmental hazard or other problem.
Raptor Abatement can help:
- Fruit growers (especially blueberry and grape)
- Airports
- Landfills
- Cities and towns (including public spaces, commercial, or residential areas).
